Brian Stoker

04-04-2008

I have been asked time and time again - have I hit a mid life crisis - the answer is NO but I was determined that this year before reaching 40 that I had to achieve my ambition which was to run the London marathon. The training has been going well and I can be regularly seen around the streets of Sunderland - in all weathers (I’m a tough guy - harking back to my army days!)
I shall be raising money to purchase sensory equipment for our adult students. We already have a sensory room but want to enhance the quality of resources. I am hoping to raise enough to buy a Sound beam. This is a device that uses ultra sonic beams to create sound and music. When the beams are interrupted by movement, sound and music are produced. Students can be fully independent in creating their own sounds and communication skills can be developed through this technology.
The race is on 13th April 2008 and I am hoping to reach my target time of 4 hours 20mins - I shall let you know how I get on.

Geka Manufacturing

Geka Manufacturing

06-02-2008

Geka Manufacturing Ltd, a producer of plastics packaging for the Cosmetics, Pharmaceutical and Technical industries, based at Tanfield Lea, Stanley, has given a late Christmas present to the Society.

The German owned company whose management are firmly behind and committed to social responsibility have demonstrated this by supporting local charities in the region. Raymond Oliver, MD, stated “We are committed to supporting local and regional charities, and in this instance we gave the opportunity to a member of our staff to choose a cause to donate to. We see this as an important and extremely worthwhile experience for our company, to promote support from the workforce also gives a good feeling to raise the morale”.

At the annual staff Christmas party, Geka raffled a £500 prize for donation. The winning ticket holder was asked to nominate a charity to benefit from the money.

This Christmas, winner Christopher Smith chose the Tyne and Wear Autistic Society as the lucky recipient.

Christopher explained, “My partner works to support children who have special needs in mainstream schools. She has told me how challenging and rewarding it can be working with children who have autism.”

“The Tyne and Wear Autistic Society supports local children and adults who have autism and who need highly specialised support. They provide services which help these people to take part in activities, learn new skills and enjoy quality of life within a safe caring environment.”

“It’s lovely to have the chance to help them with this donation.”

Nikki Wilkinson, fundraiser for the Tyne and Wear Autistic Society said, “It was a lovely surprise to receive this donation from Geka Manufacturing Ltd.”

“Their gift will help us to provide even better facilities and support for local children and adults with autism.”

“We are very grateful to Christopher for choosing us to benefit from this very generous donation.”
